Welcome to Class 11
Welcome to Class 11! My name is Mrs Scollen and I am the class teacher. The teaching assistant who is supporting our class is Mr Hagan. We are a Year 5 class and we have so many wonderful books and topics planned for the year.
Autumn
In the Autumn term we focus a lot in maths on our place value (understanding numbers up to 6 digits, including decimals) and develop our understanding of addition and subtraction, using formal written methods and using this to solve problems. In English we develop our writing and in particular focus on scary stories and how to engage the reader. We read some fantastic books such as ‘Coroline’ and ‘The Highwaymay’; as well as using the film clip ‘Alma’ to engage and inspire the children. In our foundation subjects we learn about forces in Science, Ancient Egyptians in History and biomes in Geography. We will also be designing and making a working Egyptian shaduf as well as creating an Egyptian canopic jar using Modroc.
Spring
In the Spring term we learn about the experiences of men, women and children during World War 2 in history and some of our English texts will reflect this such as ‘Carrie’s War’. In maths we will build on our learning and understanding of multiplication and division as well as fractions, decimals and percentages. In our foundation subjects we learn about materials and the human body in science, how we can protect the oceans in Geography and we will be cooking up some WW2 recipes in our DT. We will also look at street art by artists such as Banksy and Haring.
Summer
In the Summer term our maths starts to focus on other aspects such as shape, position and direction and measurements. We will be using our previous learning in other areas to help solve problems. Our English texts will include Night Bus Hero and King Kong (a picture book by Anthony Browne). In foundation subjects we learn about living things as well as our Solar System. We learn about rainforests in Geography, how leisure and entertainment has changed over time in History and we design and make our own mobile phone cases in DT, using different sewing techniques.
Throughout the year we will develop a variety of physical skills in PE and explore different technologies in computing. We learn about relationships and how to maintain positive relationships with our peers. We also take part in French lessons and music lessons regularly as well as learn about different religions around the world in RE.
