Closing a school is never an easy option. In taking this decision the safety of pupils, staff and visitors is our top priority. We are very aware that school closure disrupts our pupils routines and affects their learning. It also affects working parents and those with other commitments in the care of their children. The headteacher along with the chair of governors makes the decision about closure using their knowledge of weather forecasts, the school location and the local community. Every school is different and we do not close because another school has.
The DfE makes it clear: ‘every effort must be made to keep schools open, even if only limited numbers of pupils attend’
Various matters need to be carefully considered like staffing ratios, safety of pathways and parking, availability of lunches, health and safety of the site, staff driving distances and conditions, heating etc. We are guided in this by our business continuity plan.
When we decide the school will not be opened you will be informed as soon as we are able by text message and through the Durham county council school closures site.
Please be aware that there are other schools in the area with similar names to ours – we are Shotton HALL Primary School and not Shotton Primary School or Shotton Hall Academy.
